Remaining healthy is a greater challenge than treating a disease. Health is wealth, it cost more to treat a disease than to stay healthy. Being healthier does not necessarily equates a total over hauling of your lifestyle. It has been discovered that adopting some little lifestyle changes and introducing some positive routine into your life can go in a long way to boost your overall well-being.
Below are 8 ways to stay healthy:
1.       Eating healthy diet: Your state of health is directly proportional to what you eat. You are what you eat. One of the major reasons people are living
with all manner of diseases today has a lot to do with our modern day diet. An average person’s diet today is about 90% junks. The human body is not designed to process junks, the body can function better and healthy with fruits and healthy foods. Staying physically healthy requires maintaining a healthy eating habits. The body needs balanced diet to boost its immunity thereby fortified to fight infections and diseases. To stay healthy you must eat healthy and balanced diets. The best diet is the one that has balance of nutrients measured by calorie intake. It has been recommended by U.s Dietary guidelines that you eat more fruits and vegetables, whole grains, fat-free or low milk and milk products, lean protein and consume less: fats and sugar, refined grains, sodium, dietary cholesterol and alcohol.
2.       Regular exercise: The importance of regularly exercising our body to remain healthy cannot be overemphasized. Exercising at least 30 minutes per day has been said to benefit the body in eliminating waste, strengthens the immune system, good for the cardiovascular system, reduce obesity, improve sleep etc.  You don’t need to hit the gym to exercise, a 30 minutes briskly walking per day can do the magic for you.
3.         Sleep: After eating a healthy diet with exercise, you need to sleep. An adult needs about eight hours of sleep per night. Sleep is a cure it all for the body. Your body recovers and your immune system is improved during sleep. Sleeping less than 6 hours or more than 9 hours have been said to increase death rate by 30%. Don’t cheat nature, give your body the chance to recover and improve itself by taking your time to enjoy good sleep.
4.       Fasting: yes you heard me fasting, fasting at least once in a week has been found to be a very healthy practice for the body. During fasting the digestive system goes on holiday and the body uses the energy needed to digestive food to burn fats in the body. A number of studies have suggested that fasting regularly has numerous health benefits, which includes weight loss, reduced cholesterol and lower blood pressure. Stored glucose gets used up during fasting thereby making the body to burn fat for energy resulting in weight loss.
5.       Avoid stress: stress is a major culprit in most of the conditions affecting the well-being of the body system. During stress the body releases cortisol, the stress hormone, too much cortisol in the body can lead to inflammation, headache, high blood pressure, cardiovascular diseases etc. Reducing our stress level by staying positive and by engaging in sports, yoga meditation and being happy always can help increase our life span.
6.       Drinking enough water per day: drinking water helps maintain the body fluids balance. Your body is composed of 60% water. Your body can function well when you drink enough water. Your bodily fluids helps in digestion, absorption, circulation, saliva creation, nutrients transportation and body temperature regulation and maintenance.
7.       Avoid smoking: It have been said that smokers are liable to die young. Smoking does more harm than good to your body if any. Smoking affects the proper functioning of your lungs, increase your risk of developing hypertension, tuberculosis, liver problem etc.
8.       Avoid Alcohol or drink in moderation as drinking too much can later take a toll on your kidney and liver, leading to grave health conditions.
